City of Toronto Statement on Venue Closures

Music Canada Live thanks City of Toronto Mayor John Tory and Councillor Josh Colle (Chair of the Toronto Music Advisory Committee, TMAC) for their commitment to working to identify strategies to support live music venues.

A statement, released yesterday, responds to concerns of multiple venues closures. “We are dedicated to growing our music sector. Ensuring a thriving music scene helps drive economic growth and will keep Toronto as a vibrant place to live,” said Mayor Tory.

“Music venues in cities like Toronto are part of the life force that draw people to neighbourhoods. In addition to their economic impact, they create experiences that few other spaces can, by connecting us to the music and artists we love,” said Music Canada Live Executive Director Erin Benjamin. “It’s essential that like Toronto, other cities across Canada work with the industry to begin to assess, monitor and work to protect our live music venues.”

To share ideas and suggestions with the City of Toronto to help address concerns email your ideas and suggestions to music@toronto.ca so that they can be presented to the TMAC membership for their consideration.
